In Loving Memory of Mark Roach

A personal tribute

It’s hard to put into words what Mark Roach meant to me — and to so many others in the South African motocross community. He wasn’t just a legend of the sport; he was a mentor, a role model, and one of the kindest souls I’ve ever known.

Mark was the kind of person who gave selflessly, without ever expecting anything in return. He helped me in ways I’ll never forget — and genuinely, I don’t believe I’d be where I am today if it weren’t for him. He gave me fuel when I couldn’t afford it, food when I was hungry, money when I needed it most, and guidance when I felt lost. He did more for me than most people will ever realise.

I’ll never forget the regional races where he would load up my bike, pack my gear, and take me to the track — always making sure I was looked after. He believed in me before I believed in myself, and he never once let me down.

Mark wasn’t just there for me — he did this for so many riders. Quietly, behind the scenes, always putting others before himself. His love for the sport, and for the people in it, was unmatched. He gave everything he had to motocross, and in doing so, shaped the lives of a generation of riders.

It breaks my heart to say goodbye. I’ve lost a mentor, a friend, and someone I’ll always look up to.

Rest easy, my friend. You were the real deal — a true legend in every sense of the word. Thank you for everything you did for me, and for all of us. I’ll carry your legacy with me every time I line up at the gate.

With love and respect,
David Goosen
